Wang Laihua, a folklorist and researcher of Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences, introduced that Xu Zhen, a Wu countrymen in the Three Kingdoms period, said in his "Three Five Year Calendar" that "number starts from one, stands at three, becomes at five, flourishes at seven, and stands at nine." His emphasis on odd numbers such as "one three five seven nine" has always impressed future generations. Since ancient times, the first day of the first lunar month, the third day of the third lunar month, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, and the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, which are composed of odd numbers, are almost all major folk festivals. "In the Han culture, there has always been a tradition of valuing odd numbers and the worship of numbers. The ancients like to represent the bright, growing and developed 'Yang', and odd numbers represent 'Yang', which is more in line with the auspicious wishes of the ancients." Wang Laihua said, "On the fifth day of May, every month and every day meets five. According to the Book of Changes, 'five' symbolizes the spirit of being positive, upward, strong and enterprising. The sum of two five is ten. The Chinese people regard ten as perfect, hoping for perfection."
The ancients once gave some stories and connotations of "respecting the sun". Taking the Loong Boat Festival as an example, it is said that Qu Yuan, a doctor of Chu, committed suicide by throwing himself into the river on the fifth day of May. In order to prevent the fish and shrimp in the river from eating his body, people put Zongzi, eggs and other food into the river and rowed for salvage. Later, it evolved into the customs of wrapping Zongzi, racing Loong Boat and so on. This legend endows Loong Boat Festival with rich humanistic feelings. "On the fifth day of May, the Dragon Boat Festival comes every year. On the Loong Boat Festival, people can feel the essence and wisdom of China's excellent traditional culture in the festival's commemoration and blessing." Wang Laihua said.
