The dollar index, which measures the dollar against six major currencies, fell 0.45 percent to close at 98.346 in late trading.
At the close of trading in New York, the euro was at $1.1740, up from $1.1678 in the previous session; the pound sterling was at $1.3389, up from $1.3365.
The dollar was at 155.61 yen, down from 156.26 yen; at 0.7951 Swiss francs, down from 0.8011 Swiss francs; at 1.3779 Canadian dollars, down from 1.3810 Canadian dollars; and at 9.2542 Swedish kronor, down from 9.2864 Swedish kronor.
