The three major U.S. stock indexes fell on the 17th.
At the close of trading that day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 228.29 points, or 0.47%, to 47,885.97; the S&P 500 fell 78.83 points, or 1.16%, to 6,721.43; and the Nasdaq Composite fell 418.14 points, or 1.81%, to 22,693.32.
In terms of sectors, seven of the eleven S&P 500 sectors declined, while four rose. The technology and communication services sectors led the declines with drops of 2.19% and 1.90%, respectively, while the energy and consumer staples sectors led the gains with increases of 2.21% and 0.45%, respectively.
