The three major U.S. stock indexes closed mixed on August 8.
At the close of trading that day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 270.03 points to 49,266.11, a gain of 0.55%; the S&P 500 rose 0.53 points to 6,921.46, a gain of 0.01%; and the Nasdaq Composite fell 104.26 points to 23,480.02, a decline of 0.44%.
In terms of sectors, nine of the eleven sectors in the S&P 500 rose, while two fell. The energy sector and the consumer staples sector led the gains with increases of 3.20% and 2.26%, respectively, while the technology sector and the healthcare sector fell by 1.54% and 0.91%, respectively.
